The taniwha of Waikaremoana — my koro wouldn't swim there and I get it now

Tūhoe side here. Lake Waikaremoana in Te Urewera, the bush is thick and the water is COLD and dark. Our people have stories about taniwha in those waters going way back, and the lake itself — the name means 'sea of rippling waters' — there's a tradition that it was made by the writhing of Haumapuhia……
