Madain Saleh / Hegra — the city the Nabataeans abandoned and the Romans never fully used

Petra gets all the attention but Hegra (Mada'in Saleh) is genuinely stranger to me. The Nabataeans built it as their second city, rock-cut tombs identical in style to Petra, major incense route hub. Then around 100 CE the Romans annexed the Nabataean kingdom. Petra became a Roman provincial capital.……
